How To Repair Deteriorating Asphalt Driveway?


With time, an asphalt driveway will start crumbling and deteriorating. It is a difficult task to repair the cracks, fix the potholes, and deal with other problems on your driveway.

It requires knowledge, skills, time and patience as well. Well, with proper knowledge you can easily deal with problems on your driveway by yourself.

Here, we are going to discuss the few steps that will help you to get rid of cracks, potholes, resealing and handle different problems on your driveway:

Repair Cracks-

  • First of all remove the loose chunks of asphalt, debris and broken material insider the cracks. Use a wire brush for removing the loose part and clearing the crack.
  • Then take a bristled broom and sweep away the loose material around the cracks. You can also use a handheld vacuum cleaner to remove the loose debris and dust.
  • Then take a garden hose with a pressure nozzle and wipe away the accumulated dust in that area. Scrub that area to remove the oil and grease, then use pressurized water to remove the dust.

Fill Depressed Areas-

  • Take a garden hose with a pressure nozzle to clean the area appropriately. Apply the pressure water to remove the oil or grease. You should use a cleaning detergent to remove the oil and grease stains.
  • When the depressed area is completely clean, then apply the patching material. But, while applying the patching material, you should make sure that there should be no standing water. Also, it is OK if the surface is damped a little bit.
  • Now, apply the emulsified solution over the patch. This process is known as priming. It will help to make sure that the new patching material will mix up with the previously paved material. 
  • Now, fill the depressed areas. Take a trowel and apply the cold patching asphalt material in the depresses areas. Also, make sure that the patch is evenly spread and properly level the surrounding areas. Tamp it with a metal tempera to form the smooth patch.

Patch Potholes-


  • Form a solid base for filling the pothole! First of all remove the dirt, debris and loose material in the potholes. You should clean it until you get the solid ground. Also, clean the area in its surroundings.

Reseal the Driveway-

Also, take a good cleaning solution, then wash the area to remove the grease and oil marks. Finally, take a hose with a pressured nozzle and rinse your driveway with clean and clear water.
  • After that use a squeegee to get rid of water puddles. Well, if any area is not completely dried, then this is not a big problem. You should stir the sealant properly and make sure that all the ingredients are mixed appropriately.
  • Now, the next step is applying the sealant on small sections of the driveway. You should use a roller for properly spreading the sealant. Let the small cracks soak the sealants. This will help to fill the minor cracks on your driveway.
  • After applying the sealant, you should erect the barriers on your driveway. It is imperative to leave it for at least 24 hours to get good results.
