🛠️ What You Need Before Starting

Before you begin the setup, make sure you have the following:

  • Your Netgear AX1800 (EAX18) Wi-Fi Extender
  • An existing Wi-Fi router (ideally Wi-Fi 6 for maximum benefit)
  • A computer or mobile device (tablet, phone)
  • Your existing Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password

1️⃣ Choose Your Setup Method

Netgear provides two easy methods for setting up the AX1800 extender:

  1. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup): The quickest method, ideal for routers that support WPS.

  2. Netgear Nighthawk App or Web Browser (Manual Setup): The most reliable method, essential if your router doesn't have a WPS button.

2️⃣ Method 1: The Quick WPS Setup

WPS is the fastest way to connect your extender to your existing Wi-Fi network.

Step-by-Step WPS Guide:

  1. Plug In the Extender: Place the Netgear AX1800 extender in the same room as your existing Wi-Fi router, and plug it into a power outlet. Wait for the Power LED (or the Status LED) to turn solid green.

  2. Press WPS on the Extender: Press the WPS button on the side of your AX1800 extender. The WPS LED will start blinking.

  3. Press WPS on the Router: Within two minutes, press the WPS button on your Wi-Fi router.

  4. Wait for Connection: The extender and router will automatically connect. This usually takes a few minutes. When the connection is successful, the Router Link LED (often indicated by a picture of a router) on the extender will turn solid white or solid green.

  5. Relocate the Extender: Unplug the extender and move it to a location that is about halfway between your router and the Wi-Fi dead zone. Ensure the Router Link LED is still white/green (not red) for optimal signal strength.

3️⃣ Method 2: Manual Setup via Browser or Nighthawk App

If your router doesn't have a WPS button, or if the WPS method fails, follow the steps for a reliable manual setup.

Step-by-Step Manual Guide:

1. Connect to the Extender:
  • Plug the AX1800 extender into a power outlet near your router.
  • On your computer or mobile device, go to your Wi-Fi settings and connect to the NETGEAR_EXT network. This is a temporary network used only for setup.
No Internet? Don't worry, this temporary connection will not have internet access yet.

2. Access the Setup Page:
  • Open a web browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.) and type http://www.mywifiext.net into the address bar.
  • If you are using the Nighthawk app, simply follow the on-screen prompts.
3. Create an Account:
  • Click the NEW EXTENDER SETUP button.
  • Follow the prompts to create a new Netgear account. This requires an email and a password. This is your administrator account for the extender, not your Wi-Fi password.
4. Configure the Extender:
  • Select the Wi-Fi Extender option.
  • The extender will scan and display a list of available Wi-Fi networks.
  • Select your existing Wi-Fi network (SSID). If your router uses separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, you can select both.
  • Enter your existing Wi-Fi network password for each band you select.
5. Set the Extender Network Name:
  • You will be asked to choose a network name for your extended network.
  • Recommended: Choose the option that uses the same network name (SSID) as your main router. This creates a Smart Roaming Mesh Wi-Fi experience, allowing your devices to automatically connect to the strongest signal (either the router or the extender).
  • Click Continue or Save.
6. Finalize and Test:
  • The extender will apply the settings and reboot.
  • Once the Router Link LED is solid white/green, the setup is complete.
  • Relocate the Extender: Move the extender to the ideal location (midway between the router and the dead zone) and confirm the Router Link LED remains solid white/green.

Troubleshooting: Common issues

Issue

Solution

Setup fails, Link LED is red.

The extender is too far from the router. Try moving it closer and repeat the setup.

Can't access mywifiext.net.

Ensure your device is connected to the NETGEAR_EXT temporary network. You can also try 192.168.1.250 as an alternative IP address in the browser.

Extender works, but the speed is slow.

Move the extender closer to the router. A solid white/green Link LED is good; a red LED means the connection is poor.

Forgot the password.

Press and hold the Reset button on the extender for 7 seconds until the Power LED blinks amber. This resets the extender to factory settings, and you'll need to run the setup again.

With your Netgear AX1800 extender successfully set up, you can now enjoy seamless, high-speed Wi-Fi 6 coverage throughout your entire home!
