For Budget Chief Neera Tanden Votes Postponed in Blow to Confirmation

Two Senate committees abruptly postponed Wednesday hearings to think about and vote on Neera Tanden's nomination, another sign that her nomination to become White House budget chief is imperiled.

Tanden, the nominee for director of the Office of Management and Budget, was already facing hurdles within the confirmation process after Democratic Sen. Tanden's presence on Twitter has become a central obstacle to her confirmation. Manchin and most Republican senators have taken issue with Tanden's past tweets criticizing and insulting GOP senators and even some within the Democratic Party . Tanden currently is president of the liberal think factory the middle for American Progress.

In a 50-50 Senate where Democrats hold a narrow majority, the party can't afford to lose any votes or they need to convince Republicans to hitch them. Still, not all Democrats have even signaled how they'll vote on Tanden's nomination, which could further disrupt the method and force them to sway more GOP senators.

As of now, Democrats would wish to convert a minimum of one Republican, though variety who could be eyed as potential backers have already signaled they will not support her nomination, including Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine. GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska remains undecided on Tanden and remains reviewing her nomination.

Republicans, meanwhile, try to carry their conference together con to Tanden. Many of Biden's other Cabinet nominees have won bipartisan support, though GOP senators have also signaled hesitance toward others.

Following news of the postponed hearings, the White House again reiterated its support for Tanden's historic nomination. If confirmed, Tanden would become the primary Asian American woman to steer OMB.

"Neera Tanden may be a leading policy expert who brings critical qualifications to the table during this point of unprecedented crisis," White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted. "She also has important perspective and values, understanding firsthand the powerful difference policy can make within the lives of these browsing adversity ."
