What's it Like Living in Mid-Western Canada?

Canada is an incredible country from coast to coast, but many forget a lot is going on in the center that anyone could enjoy.  If you're curious about central and mid-western Canada, these are the most important things to know.

The Culture

Mid-western Canada isn't the same as the American midwest.  Instead, this portion of the country is further west and offers a view into life away from the stress of major cities and coastal politics.  The culture here is a fantastic mix of finding a work and life balance and getting to enjoy leisure when you're off work.

Of course, there are still those who climb the corporate ladder, but if you want to live in comfort and focus more on your personal life than work, this is the place to do it.

The Seasons

The seasons are a hot topic when it comes to any area of Canada.  Unfortunately, the mid-western portion of the country is one of the hardest hit when it comes to winter.  Snow starts in September and October and then can keep going for as late as early May.  In some national parks like Banff and Jasper, there are ice warnings and even skiing as late as mid-May.

Thankfully, the rest of the year gets to enjoy simple and comfortable warmth.  It doesn't get as hot here as it does on the west coast, which makes this an awesome place to live.  The only fall-back about this season is that in the summer and fall, this area can be prone to dry and drought, which can lead to fires in some areas of the provinces.

The Entertainment

There’s so much to do and see while in the mid-western portion of Canada!  In Calgary, you can take in the Stampede, which is a fantastic display of everything from lassoing to live musical shows that you can’t find anywhere else.

Beyond this, there are endless museums, art galleries, live shows, and fantastic theater performances that make this area nonstop fun.

The Cost of Living

Canada is less expensive than the United States and many other major countries: but it can still be costly.  If you're on either coast, you're going to see high prices from Toronto or Vancouver, but in the center of the country, you're safe.

There are lower prices on everything from Calgary homes for sale to the food you eat and entertainment you watch.  This allows you to spend less time worrying about bills and more time enjoying fun with loved ones.

The Reasons People Stay

For many Canadians, especially in the mid-western portion of the country, it can feel like they're constantly being pulled to move east or west.  Vancouver and Toronto both have their perks, but there's so much in mid-western Canada that shouldn't be ignored.

People stay here to get away from the politics of the east coast and avoid the high costs of the west coast.  They stay to be near family and friends, and they have neighbors who aren't strangers the way they are on the shores.  There are countless reasons to stay in the midwest, and those who live here are proud of all of them.
